Question: what is cephalosporin, as in suprax is a cephalosporin type antibiotic

Answer: This is a class of antibiotics first found by isolating a fungus from a sewer from Sardinia. The structure is similar to penicillin but differs in one of the major side chains. Molecular engineering has changed the initial structure as we have found that adding or changing side chains changes the spectrum of resistance and the type of bacteria that they will kill.

Question: What are the side effects of Suprax?

Answer: Suprax is a cephalosporin type antibiotic. Side effects are very similar to penicillin for most patients. Occasional nausea, diarrhea, allergic reactions tend to top the list. There is a long list of occasional problems seen with the cephalosporins.

Question: What is "Suprax" used to treat?

Answer: Suprax is the brand name for an antibiotic called cefixime. This is a semi synthetic drug of the cephalosporin class used to treat a broad spectrum of infections. It resembles penicillin a little; but, with different side chains and ring structure and has similar side effects to penicillin. Ten percent of patients allergic to penicillin will be allergic to this class of drugs. Suprax is fairly new and is relatively expensive as a consequence.
