Propranolol and Migraines [posted 8/13/98]
Question: My wife is taking propranolol for an occasional racing heartbeat. She has had migraines all her adult life (she's 47). Within a few days of starting the propranolol she started having migraines back-to-back, and has had four in five days. Previously she averaged 4-5 a year. Her doctor said after the third one that there should not be a relationship, but after the fourth one we're not so sure. What do you think?

Answer: Generally, propranolol is a preventer of migraine headaches. I can't think of a patient that has had this problem and I have hundreds on beta blockers. Is your wife going through menopause? The flux in sexual steroids is notorious for changing migraine frequency.

Question: What are the side effects of taking Propranolol?

Answer: Fatigue, nightmares, hair loss, slow pulse, nausea, low blood pressure are the most common ones.
