Can Labyrinthitis Occur Due to Drug Interactions, or Side Effects [posted 10/28/98]
Question: I've had labyrinthitis occur three times in the past 2 years, twice in the past year. I began taking hyzaar for hypertention about 6 months ago. Could there be a relationship? I also take miacalcin, zocor, and estrogen.

Answer: Possibly, check your blood pressure standing and lying. If a large drop, a potential cause of vertigo. Also, some patients have fixed constriction of the carotid arteries which can cause the problem. Vertigo is listed on hyzaars PDR listing for a reason.

Labyrinthitis [posted 7/23/98]
Question: I have been diagnosed with labyrinthitis. I am wondering how many times this can recur. I have had it three times within the past two and a half years. Is it normal for this to keep happening?

Answer: Can last on/off for up to 2-3 years, although it sounds like benign positional vertigo rather than labyrinthitis (they're treated the same however).

Labyrinthitis Drug Treatment
Question: How long should a person stay on Meclizine for labyrinthitis when all symptoms are gone?

Answer: Meclizine is treatment for the symptoms only. It will not eliminate the cause for the vertigo. Consequently, when the symptoms are gone, stop the meclizine.

Question: How much time should somebody with Viral Labyrinthitis spend lying down?

Answer: Laying down has no particular benefit in vestibulitis. However, by doing so, you canít fall and hurt yourself.
