Doctors' Answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" - Deltasone

These comments are made for the purpose of discussion and should NOT be used as recommendations for or against therapies or other treatments. An individual patient is always advised to consult their own physician.

Allergic reaction to Deltasone
Question: I am a 48 year old male who is obese and has been diagnosed with bronchitis. Medications prescribed were Prednisone for one week and codeine cough syrup. Then Deltasone with Biaxin and the same cough syrup. Symptoms are as follows: Involuntary shaking, muscle cramps all over body to the point that a cup of coffee can not be held, body swelling from head to toe (I cannot put clothing or shoes on due to enlargement of body), mood swings, tight congestion in lungs, skin breaking from swelling, tongue swelling, hearing things that are not there, sleeplessness, extreme fatigue, and muscle cramps in my chest on right side. I am allergic to penicillin and oranges. I now have rashes in the groin and on my buttocks. If this is an allergic reaction, will Benedryl counteract it or do I need hospitalization?

Answer: I certainly hope that by the time you read this that you are better. It is hard to tell how much is reaction to steroids and the antibiotics and how much is the original disease. Clearly systemic shakes and muscle cramps would not be related to any bronchitis. Whether the drug could cause the symptoms is the next question. I am sorry that there is such a time delay between your transmission and the reply.
