Question: Can you please tell me what the drug Cytomel is and what it is used for? Thank you.

Answer: Cytomel is one of the active thyroid hormones T3(there is also T4). Currently, it is used to supplement patients with levothyroxine(like synthroid). There is a current debate on whether this is necessary. The previous thought was that T4(like levothyroxine) was converted to T3 and that supplementation in patients with hypothyroidism was not necessary. There have been a couple of studies recently that suggest that we may need to supplement with T3 as well as replace the T4. Currently, no one knows the answer to this problem.
