Doctors' Answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" - CSContin

These comments are made for the purpose of discussion and should NOT be used as recommendations for or against therapies or other treatments. An individual patient is always advised to consult their own physician.

CSContin
Question: Darvocet N-100 and Tylenol #4 (2 of each, every 4 hours) was replaced with CSContin 30 mg, 1 every 8 hours. What is the difference between strengths and derivation of these types of drugs and their frequency of use?

Answer: CSContin is slow release codeine 30 mg over about 10-12 hours. One every 8 hours would translate to 90 mg of codeine per day. Darvocet N-100 has 65 mg of propoxyphene, Tylenol #4 has 45 mg of codeine. Two Tyl # 4 would equal the codeine in CSContin, although there is longer time release of the CSContin. 65 mg of Propoxyphene is about equal to 30 mg of codeine-- there is individual variation. Three or four a day of this drug would equal the codeine in the CSContin.
