Question: My daughter, who is 9 years old, has developed a rash after taking amoxicillin for 3 days. She said that it burns. It also feels hot to the touch. Will the rash go away now that the amoxicillin has been discontinued? Is there any thing that I can do for the burning?

Answer: Antihistamines like benadryl, the drug reaction may last 2-3 weeks.

Tri-Leven 28 and Amoxicillin [posted 8/7/98]
Question: My wife recently finished a 10 day course of Amoxicillin. She takes Tri-Leven 28 for oral contraception. How long should we continue to use alternate contraception methods before the pill can again be expected to be fully effective?

Answer: A week at the most. This problem is more theoretical than real, but there is no reason to increase your risk of pregnancy.

Amoxicillin and Alcohol [posted 8/4/98]
Question: What are the effects of drinking alcohol while on a 500 mg (3 times a day) of Amoxicillin, if there are any at all?

Answer: Minimal.

Use During Pregnancy
Question: I am 15 weeks pregnant and have been prescribed Amoxil to treat a urinary infection. I would like to know if there is any risk for the baby.

Answer: This class of drugs (penicillin and penicillin like) is one of the safer classes of antibiotics to be used during pregnancy.

Amoxicillin Drug Interactions
Question: What are the possible effects of ciprofloxacin and amoxicillin taken together.

Answer: Amoxicillin and cipro have different but similar spectrum of activity. Amoxicillin is a little better against gram positive bacteria. Cipro will have some coverage of mycoplasma and chylmdia that amoxicillin lacks completely. In general, these are not drugs that are used together due to their similar activities.
