Question: I developed tardive dyskinesia in 1996 after being prescribed Compazine for acute gastritis. The doctor didn't check my chart, or he would have noticed that I had 10 mg. of Stelazine in my system at the time. Now I am afraid of any anticholinergic drugs. I have a bad case of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and my surgeon (who performed a bowel resection in Dec. 1999) thinks I should take Lomotil to control my diarhhea instead of Immodium A-D. Can I safely take Lomotil without risking the worsening of my tardive dyskinesia? My surgeon doesn't know anything about this topic. Any input you could give me about compazine-like drugs would be very helpful. I am also scheduled for a urology workup for urinary incontinence, by the way.

Answer: I am not aware of any risk of tardive dyskinesia with Lomotil. But, I would contact the scientific department of the company who makes Lomotil, Searle 800-323-1603. They keep track of all the case reports etc. related to Lomotil and can do a complete literature search to ensure there is no reported interactions.
