Question: I was diagnosed with Celiacs disease a year ago. I am told I will always have it which I find hard to believe because it is an allergy and allergies sometimes go away. I have adhered to a gluten free diet and therefore have had no symptoms but was wondering if I cheated now and then would I be permenantly damaging my intestine or any part of my intestine so that I would eventually end up not being able to absorb anything again which was what happened to me a year ago. Please tell me I can eat bread one day!!!!!!

Answer: Probably not, this is an inherited disorder that you will have permanently unless some genetic engineering fixes the defect in the next 20 years. Some patients can indulge occasionally depending on the severity of the problem. This will induce diarrhea and occasionally weight loss, depending on your level of severity and the amount you ingest. There is no current cure except avoidance.
