Doctors' Answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" - Poisoning

These comments are made for the purpose of discussion and should NOT be used as recommendations for or against therapies or other treatments. An individual patient is always advised to consult their own physician.

Question: I have a 1.5 year old child who swallowed some Minoxidil topical solution 2% hair regrowth treatment. He has been vomiting all night long and has fever. Right now he seems OK, but today he fainted for a little while. Could you please tell me what are the primary reactions that this drug may promote. And at this time what care should I have about him? I am writing from Mexico and we don't have any poison center down here.

Answer: Minoxidil was initially used as a blood pressure medication. A one time dose would produce no long term effects, but will reduce blood pressure for the time that it is in the child's system.

Accidental poisonings
Question: I understand that methanol contained in nail polish removers can lead to accidental poisonings if ingested. Are there any alternatives on the market that do not contain methanol? Do any nail polish removers have zero toxicity?

Answer: You are accurate that nail polish often contains methanol. But, why would anyone ingest it except by accident? You can check at the supermarket on the ingredient list, but it doesn't appear to be a problem for most patients who use these products.
