Doctors' Answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" - Ovarian Cysts

[posted 10/17/1999]
Question: I began taking triphasil-28 for the treatment of large ovarian cysts in January 1999 after three months on Mircette (which resulted in five weeks of bleeding and abnormal discharge). I began having depression/mood swings and noted that it was usually around the time that I started taking the white pills (a week after my period). Is this normal or is there another pill that may have less side effects? I also still have a great deal of pain in my right ovary and my gynecologist could feel a cyst at my last exam (September 1999). Is there a more effective pill for the treatment of cysts?

Answer: This is probably due to the variation between the estrogen and progesterone levels. This may change if your gyn would change to a pill with a different formulation. He/she is trying to keep your ovaries from cycling and this takes a higher dosage of estrogen/progesterone than just the birth control aspect. I know of no other treatments.
