Elbow Nerve Problems [posted 10/13/98]
Question: I just completed electrode (?) testing for ulnar nerve
entrapment at the elbow and results show I have significant symmetrical entrapment at both elbows. The median nerves are fine. Since waiting lists for surgery in Alberta are quite lengthy, I'd like to know what I can do for this problem on my own until I do, indeed, have surgery. I have quite a bit of pain in my left arm, and I use ice, heat, contrast baths to help. Also, I am a body builder and would like to continue. Is this safe to do or am I hurting the nerve more? Are there any exercises or particular stretches that would help?
Answer: Heat to your elbows on a daily basis. Keep all the weight off your elbows at all times. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories on a daily basis.
Paralyzed and Nervous System functioning
Question: If a patient is paralyzed is his/her nervous system still functioning? If so to what extent?
Answer: Paralyzed due to spinal cord trauma or a stroke? If trauma, it depends on the level. I need more information.
