Doctors' Answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" - Lipomas

These comments are made for the purpose of discussion and should NOT be used as recommendations for or against therapies or other treatments. An individual patient is always advised to consult their own physician.

Lipomas [posted 8/4/98]
Question: I have approximately a dozen or so lipomas (small, benign fatty tumors, rubber like and eraser size) located around the abdominal area. Some are on the larger size and can hurt at times. And over the years there seem to be more and more of them. I want to get rid of them, but I know any surgical removal will leave my abdomen covered with scars, one for each lipoma removed. I would like to avoid that. A plastic surgeon said that liposuction has been tried, but with very limited success. Is there any other way to get rid of them, or at least stop them from multiplying?

Answer: There is no current way to dispose of them other than surgery. Also, they are not multiplying in the classic sense, but you do have a propensity to grow these and should expect to see more as you age.
