Doctors' Answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" - Jumpy Legs

These comments are made for the purpose of discussion and should NOT be used as recommendations for or against therapies or other treatments. An individual patient is always advised to consult their own physician.

Jumpy Legs
Question: My 83 year old mother has a problem with "jumpy legs." They don't hurt her, but they keep her from sleeping. Any suggestions as to medication or vitamins that can be used will be appreciated.

Answer: "Jumpy legs" are medically referred to as the Restless Leg Syndrome. This is a fairly common problem and usually has no easily correctible solution. There is no one solution to the problem, but there is a long list of things that can be done, which occasionally work. These include iron pills, antidepressants, melatonin, alcohol elimination, and caffeine elimination. This problem is common and very difficult to eliminate.
