Doctors' Answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" - Galactorrhea

These comments are made for the purpose of discussion and should NOT be used as recommendations for or against therapies or other treatments. An individual patient is always advised to consult their own physician.

Idiopathic Galactorrhea & Edema
Question: I have idiopathic galactorrhea and edema. I was wondering if the two could be linked. My highest prl level was 36(only checked twice). I was told the galactorrhea was a side effect of metaclopramide, however I was taking very little and have not taken it in the past year, but am still symptomatic. Do I need to address this issue? It is possible that I could have had some DES exposure could this be related?

Answer: Lots of men and women have galactorrhea. Most of the time I don't find a source. Treatment with bromocriptine or other medications will eliminate the problem(and might improve your sex drive). If a CT of your pituitary has been done( and may need to be repeated), I would either forget it or take the mediations and eliminate the discharge.
