Doctors' Answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" - Cystoscopy

These comments are made for the purpose of discussion and should NOT be used as recommendations for or against therapies or other treatments. An individual patient is always advised to consult their own physician.

Question: How often should a patient have a cystoscopy to check for a reoccurrence of a bladder papilloma which was first found in 1970? There has been no reoccurrence since, but a urologist is trying to convince me that I need a yearly cystoscopy. Given that this involves anesthesia I am very reluctant to undergo the procedure on more than a two yearly basis.

Answer: For the first several years, yearly seems prudent. However, after 5-7 years occasional visualization 2-3 years is usually recommended.
