Luvox, Flagyl And Cryptosporisiosis [posted 8/7/98]
Question: I am currently on the antidepressant Luvox. I was also just diagnosed with cryptosporisiosis, which I probably caught from calves I was examining that were infected with this coccidian protozoan: genus cryptosporidium (maybe species parvum). Is flagyl (metronidazole) really effective against this protozoan and would there be any drug-drug interactions between flagyl and luvox?

Answer: Flagyl is fairly useless for cryptosporisiosis. Usually, the infection is self limited. There are some fairly expensive medications that we use in immuno-compromised patients, but usually only supportive treatment in immuno normal patients. As to the interaction, if you elect to take flagyl, I'd stop the Luvox. No data, but one week off the Luvox is not a big deal.
