Question: What is the probability of incontinence in a two stage fistula surgery, when a seton is first employed, followed by surgery 2 months later. For instance, what percentage of patients experience incontinence? Also, what degree of incontinence or severity is common, such as occasional gas, or explosive bowel movements? Please describe the likely outcome. Also, can you recommend a colo-rectal surgeon or two in the Wilmington, Delaware area?

Answer: Depends on the underlying cause for the fistula, the length and the chronicity. As to recommendations, call the American Cancer Society and inquire about colo-rectal surgeons that they recommend in your area.
